To start the legal marriage process, you must complete a Notice Of Intended Marriage Form and give it to your celebrant 1-18 months before your wedding and show ID docs that prove your date and place of birth, identity, and that any previous marriages have ended.

During the wedding, both parties’ full legal names must be said in front of witnesses, you must sign the required legal paperwork, your celebrant must state the legal definition of marriage in front of witnesses, and you’re required to recite a legal line of vows. The rest of the ceremony is entirely up to our imagination.

No, you don’t have to be a citizen or hold a permanent residency to have your marriage registered in Australia.

No, a valid overseas marriage is generally recognised in Australia but not registered. To have your marriage registered in Australia, I would recommend having a small legal ceremony at home before you head abroad for your destination wedding. Luckily, I’m available for both and have my suitcase ready at the door.
